Battlefield 3 Back to Karkand DLC Available Dec 6th

Back to Karkand, the first digital expansion pack for the critically acclaimed Battlefield 3, will be available December 6th for download on the PlayStation®Network and December 13th on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace and the PC. Building on the biggest launch in EA history, Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand is a full-feature digital expansion pack giving gamers more of the explosive multiplayer that Joystiq.com called "mesmerizing," and gameplay that has won over 60 industry awards and continues to delight gamers across the globe in what Seth Schiesel of The New York Times declares, "the most visually realistic shooter on the market."
Utilizing the power of Frostbite™ 2, the Back to Karkand expansion pack remasters four of the most popular Battlefield multiplayer maps in the franchise's history all with enhanced levels of destruction, including Strike at Karkand, Wake Island, Gulf of Oman and Sharqi Peninsula. In addition to these four new maps, Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand marks the return of the classic Conquest Assault mode from Battlefield 2™. A twist on the beloved Conquest mode, Conquest Assault starts one team in command of all control points on the map while the opposing team must assault and take the flags over in order to stop their tickets from bleeding down to zero. Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand also features three new vehicles, ten new weapons, five new dog tags, five new achievements/trophies and an added layer of persistence where players complete assignments to unlock items and earn rewards.
"Free for those that pre-ordered or purchased the Limited Edition of Battlefield 3, Back to Karkand is another way for us to say thanks to our fans and show our continued support for the game," said Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President of the EA Games Label. "The launch of Battlefield 3 was only the beginning as we vow to keep the game alive with additional content and gameplay improvements in the months ahead. We're excited to recreate and share some new Battlefield moments on these beloved maps that only Battlefield games can provide."
Available exclusively for one week on the PlayStation Network, Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand will be available December 6th at no extra charge* or for $14.99. The expansion pack will be available on December 13th for $14.99 on PC at Origin.com or for 1200 MS points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Saints Row 3 Takes On A Bold New Game Play

Saints Row the Third, THQ and Volition Inc latest game in the Saints Row series will be Released on Nov 15th 2011. Saints Row the 3rd can be described as, “The most ridiculous over the top experience in gaming” According to
Drew Holmes, Writer for Saints Row The Third at Volition Inc. And he is right; this is not the Saints Row you might have been expecting from the past series. The Saints Row gang is still the central part of the story but then the game takes a different direction because your game is your Sand Box and that means you can play or do anything you want in the Sand Box including brutally beating up pedestrians, running naked through the game or beating people with a giant purple dildo. Ok maybe that’s not the weird part, I can appreciate a few laughs. What is corny is the pink cat cartoon Professor Ganky that is introduced into the game. Its like an 80’s version of Japanamation. You basically have a chance to play an episode of Professor Gankys reality climax mini game. I don’t know if I’m watching or playing a Japanese cartoon or playing Saints Row. Other added features in the game play just don’t make sense like the battle tanks and fighter jets. You can grab a tank and destroy stuff or use a jet and laser cars or drop air strikes. Again am I playing Call of Duty or Saints Row?  Maybe the guys at Volition and THQ did not know what to feature in a game so dumped everything that was popular into the pool to see what happens. I think the only thing missing from the madness is some Zombies. Not everything from Saints Row series is gone. Saints Row 3 still has the customization capabilities for your character we all liked. Only fuzzy bunny suits and space costumes are just part of some of the available options. Saints Row the third will either be either over the top flop or hot. It’s to early to tell if mixed bag of ridiculous game play is what gamers are looking in this title.

Battlefield 3 pre-order exclusives not really exclusive

Getting excited about the pre-order exclusives for Battlefield 3 that you can receive for pre-ordering from selected retailers? Unfortunately there has been a change of plan. Dice has announced they will not make the exclusives solely available to pre-order customers. The original offer was to allow pre-order customers who bought from selected retailers, special weapons and abilities the game does not include when you buy Battlefield 3 on September 6 when it is released. Apparently many customers complained that it favored customers who have more disposable money then those those whom were on a budget and had to wait until the release date. The controversy forced Dice to agree to not make the pre-order exclusives, "exclusive." That means that all of the pre-order weapons and abilities will be available for download after a short period of time for all users to download. Dice decided everyone should be able to enjoy equal game play regardless when you are able to purchase the game.
If you really want to get a freebie for buying early, Dice has something for it's Amazon.com customers. They are offering a free BF 3 tee for all early birds.  Check out this link for details http://enterbf3.com/battlefield-3-preorder.php

Anonymous ties to Sony's network shut down do not add up

In April, hackers broke into Sony's online network, gaining access to the personal information and passwords of some 77 million PSN and Qriosity accounts. The attacks were believed to have been performed by Anonymous, a group of hackers who's aim is to punish global companies involved with supporting censorship on the internet.
For these hackers, it appears they might not have been as anonymous as they thought.  According to the New York Times, Spanish police Friday June 10th confirmed that they apprehended three men in connection with the Sony security breach. The police believe they were involved not only with the attacks on Sony, but with other strikes against government websites the world over, and characterized the trio as the local heads of Anonymous.
The three men--all in their early 30s--were apprehended in Almeria, Barcelona, and Valencia, and released pending formal charges. According to the paper, the expected charges will be forming an illegal association to attack public and corporate websites, with each facing a prison sentence of up to three years.
What is not clear from the report from Spanish authorities is whether or not they are the actual perpetrators involved in the Sony case. This could be a misguided attempt to blame known anonymous leaders residing in Spain.
The reason that arresting anyone in connection to the Sony hack may prove difficult is that Anonymous is a large organization of hackers world wide according to the the New York Times. They are an internet activist group largely in opposition of the arrest of Julian Assange head of Wiki Leaks.  Anonymous seeks to punish corporations or governments that aim to silence communication on the internet.
Anonymous has claimed responsibility for the Dec. 8 attack on MasterCard, which had stopped processing donations for WikiLeaks. Other targets included PayPal, which stopped accepting donations for Mr. Assange’s group. Visa.com was also affected by the attacks, as were the Web sites of the Swedish prosecutor’s office and the lawyer representing the two women who accused Mr. Assange of sexual misconduct. The group said the actions were part of an effort called Operation Payback, which began as a way of punishing companies that attempted to stop Internet file-sharing and movie downloads.
There seems to be no connection why hackers would want to infiltrate video game networks when they have made their protest against censorship public.

"Sometimes not everything is as it seems"......from the movie V for Vendetta."

Bethesda Soft works releases trailer for Prey 2 at E3

Insomniac launches new games and pre-order extras at E3

Insomniac announced their launch plans for 3 of their latest games, Resistance 3, Ricochet & Ratchet, and their brand new title Overstrike during their opening presentation at E3. Overstrike revolves around an elite team of outcasts. Overstrike 9 is comprised of a reformed mercenary, a mischievous lifelong thief, a gifted but rebellious young scientist, and a temperamental decorated detective. Using an arsenal full of fringe-tech gadgets, this team of elite agents are ready to save the world in an epic adventure that spans the globe. Overstrike is a four-player co-op action experience, and is the first multiplatform release for Insomniac. What I like about this title is that it offers a choice of 2 female players and has the same feel as Gears of War. Check out the trailer for a better idea of the game play.
As for Resistance 3 fans, the pre-order has started and Insomniac has a few good reasons why pre-ordering your game may be worth while. Here is what’s on the table for pre-order early birds:

Game Stop pre-order: Exclusive Capelli Necklace & Multiplayer-booster
Joseph Capelli wears a necklace of Chimeran teeth during Resistance 3. Show that you are the resistance, with this authentic replica that symbolizes the battle against the Chimera. Pre-ordering at Gamestop grants access to a unique multiplayer-booster, which allows you to start Resistance 3 multiplayer at Level 5. This also offers immediate flexibility and character customization options from the moment you begin the online competitive game.

Amazon pre-order: Exclusive In-game Air Fuel Grenade
The No. 60 Air Fuel Grenade has been issued for combating Chimera in tight spaces commonly found in urban conflicts. The grenade will adhere to almost any surface, biological or otherwise, and deployed a cloud of flammable vapor. Once released, the cloud ignited, creating a massive explosion. Preorder at Amazon.com to bring this fan favorite grenade to your Resistance 3 campaign.

Best Buy: Exclusive Multiplayer Skin w/ Purchase
Lt. Nathan Hale skipped his viral inhibitor treatments in the final hours of Resistance 2, in order to continue the fight against the Chimera. Play as him in his final hours with this special multiplayer skin, letting you bring Hale to the battlefields of Resistance 3.

Walmart: Exclusive 5 Custom Name Titles w/ Purchase
Show off your Resistance 3 fandom in competitive online play with this pre-order package that offers a special set of five custom name titles, including Sentinel. The Sentinels are an elite group of soldiers in Resistance, and the only way to obtain these exclusive multiplayer PSN tags is by pre-ordering at Wal-Mart

If you pre-order at any other retailer, you receive a special R-FORM skin. They were backbone of the U.S. effort against the Chimera during the war, Black Ops troops were a common site at SRPA facilities and during special operations. Mostly killed and destroyed, this special multiplayer skin lets you return as one of the most mysterious soldiers from R:FOM and R2.

Add Rock Star's new release LA Noire to your collection

Rock Star the developers for addictive games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, recently launched it's newest title LA Noire.  This game has the same sort of feeling during game play as Grand Theft Auto only the player gets more involved with the story by solving cases and trying to understand characters rather then spending hours driving around aimlessly. But for auto enthusiast, dont worry they got you covered, snatch as many cars as you want if you want to earn that medal. LA Noire's story takes place during the post-war boom of Hollywood's Golden Age, Cole Phelps is an LAPD detective thrown headfirst into a city drowning in its own success. Corruption is rampant, the drug trade is exploding, and murder rates are at an all-time high. In his fight to climb the ranks and do what’s right, Phelps must unravel the truth behind a string of arson attacks, racketeering conspiracies and brutal murders, battling the L.A. underworld and even members of his own department to uncover a secret that could shake the city to its rotten core.

LA Noire is a violent crime thriller and does contain scenes that are definitely adult content. I would not recommend this for children under 16. What you will find unique about this game is the entertainment factor beacuse you feel like you are controlling a movie not playing a game. In addition, each character has their own facial expressions and you have to figure out if the person is lying to you or telling the truth as you try to solve cases and advance the story. This game is definitely addicting if you enjoy role playing games that host a challenge. If you are the kind of person who must grab all the trophy's and medals and solve the cases 100% correct then, Rock Star added a Social Club to the game play that allows you to connect online with other players and grab advice on how to interrogate your suspects that will help you solve the crimes.

As a native from LA I'm giving this the thumbs up, Rock Star really did their homework and gave us a game that really looks and feels like post World War 2 LA. The amount of details both in the script, map and game play really make this game out of the ordinary.

I would advise users to visit the store regularly so you dont miss out again.

Fan site worth checking out

Every now and then we run across sites that are worth a mention and is generally entertaining.
I have picked two for this week’s websites worth mentioning. Both of these sites were chosen based on the ‘keeping it real factor’. The content was created by game fans who just purely love what they do and have created video and content for our enjoyment. The first video is a trailer for Half Life created by the Purchase Brothers. These guys made the video on a budget of $500. I personal think Valve could not have done a better job. Both ‘Fall Out’ and ‘Kill Zone’ fan made videos are worth watching, way to go guys.

The Second site worth a browse is Lethal Frag by Matt McKnight. Matt is a serious gamer who created his own video walk through and game tricks.

GGP is all about serious game fans and sharing the love. If you or someone you know has a site worth a mention e-mail me and I’ll try and post it.

'Brink' Bethesda's latest release

Monday May 9th Bethesda Soft works latest first person shooter, 'Brink' was released. Bethesda is well know for some of the best game titles we loved in the past such as Doom, Quake, Fallout and Wolfinstien.  Brink, Bethesda newest FPS is beginning to look pretty promising. Brink is an immersive first-person shooter that blends single-player, co-op, and multiplayer game play into one seamless experience, allowing you to develop your character whether playing alone, with your friends, or against others online. You decide the combat role you want to assume in the world of Brink as you fight to save yourself and mankind’s last refuge. Brink offers a compelling mix of dynamic battlefields, extensive customization options, and an innovative control system that will keep you coming back for more.

Some of the customizations that include designing your own player’s body build and appearance are factored into its performance ability. For example, the larger the body the stronger it may be however he can also be slower and less agile. The weapons and controls are nothing to new. Some people might find this easier to get into the game. But I think this really comes down to personal choice. The game host single player campaign, co-op and Multi-player with up to 16 players at a time. Sorry to say, this game won’t offer you a mosh pit if that is what you’re expecting. Other development includes “play Smart” which gives you intelligence and direction to help you complete a mission.

The game does have the feel of other FPS like Kill Zone and Call of Duty with nothing incredibly new or unseen. For FPS fans I would say this is worth getting. Bethesda so far has done a pretty good job on developing games we like with an original look and feel. It is to early to tell if this will be a huge success but I don’t think FPS fans will be let down.

PlayStation Network customer update

Well another week has gone by and PSN services are still unavailable. Service was supposed to have been restored to the PlayStation Network customers last week as promised by Sony’s executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai in his press speech given on May 1st.  Apparently Sony was unable to restore service and stated they are 'undergoing further system checks'. As of the last official communication from Sony on March 5th, PSN does not have a confirmed date as to when the service will be available. However according to Mariko Yasu from Bloomberg, Sony plans to restore network service by May 31st.  Meanwhile, many users are expressing frustration from the unfulfilled promise to restore the network services during the promised time frame.

Sony PSN has faced a firestorm of negative press since the network went down from malicious attacks by suspected hackers calling themselves "Anonymous" who infiltrated the Network on April 22nd stealing 70+ million members’ identities. At last there is some good news for PlayStation users. Sony has released a plan to take care of their customers while they make further adjustments to secure their network. On Sony's update on May 5th Sony is offering free ‘All Clear ID Plus’ service to all of its United States customers. Sony is currently working on a deal to have the service available in Europe and other countries shortly. The program information and activation codes will be sent to its US customers shortly via e-mail and you have until June 18th to sign up.

What will the ‘All Clear ID Plus’ do for me? How does it work?
1.                  By signing up for the all clear ID plus you are protected by the industries best cyber monitoring and surveillance companies. This is a 3rd party surveillance program that will detect the use of your identity and monitor that against criminal websites and look for any suspicious reports where your identity might have been used. It checks police or law enforcement agencies reports to identify if someone has used your identity and you will be alerted immediately.
2.                  It offers a staffed licensed private investigator that will investigate any unauthorized use of your information and if necessary help you restore any damages that might have occurred.
3.                  All Clear ID Plus will offer you $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user

The All Clear Identity Plus service will be free for one year and is a good step for Sony to quickly offer a plan to put its customers first. We can all understand that any company, who does business focused around a large global network, faces chances of a criminal hack attacks. Learning from your weakness’ can only make you stronger in the end.  Its no doubt when Sony Entertainment goes back into service and within the next year we will see some big changes that will put them back into leadership position in the game industry.

It will be interesting to exactly how this plays out as 70 million users gain access to PlayStation Plus.

Sony PlayStation to restore service

In an official press conference this morning Sunday May 1st, Sony’s executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai bowing deeply, addresses the press saying, “I am deeply sorry for worrying and inconveniencing our users,”. He announced Sony PlayStation Network will restore partial services this week. The company also announced both a series of immediate steps to enhance security across the network and a new customer appreciation program to thank its customers for their patience and loyalty. The network hack is now being called the largest attack ever in history. The undergoing investigation includes the help of the FBI and many legal enforcement agencies worldwide.

Most of the network services will be restored with the exception of the PlayStation Store where users can purchase and download games and content. This will not be restored until later this month due to security upgrades. When the network is restored, users will need to change their pass words upon immediate sign in to network services. The launch of the 'Welcome back program' will be different based on your location and will include the following:

  • Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
  • All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
  • Q Music Unlimited subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

Sony is making a serious move toward strengthening its online services and had been working on a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months. Sony has decided to expedite the move and is also creating the position of Chief Information Security Officer, directly reporting to Shinji Hasejima, Chief Information Officer of Sony Corporation, to add a new position of expertise in and accountability for customer data protection, and to supplement existing information security personnel.

Sony has a lot of work to do to regain customer loyalty but will be making every effort to regain its leading position in the video gaming industry. “Sony continues to place utmost priority on its network strategy,” Mr. Hirai said. “We intend to continue our global expansion.” I for one am looking forward to seeing Sony get back into the game.

Playstation Network hack confirmed

It looks like another loss for Sony Entertainment fans. This time I am afraid Sony will possibly suffer a loss in their market share in the video gaming industry as one of the worst online hacks in history was confirmed today by Sony Entertainment. On April 17th the PlayStation Network database was hacked by an unknown source. All of the 65 million users subscribed to the PSN have had their personal data stolen. Sony this morning issued a warning to all of its PSN users stating, "To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports." Even if you have been using network cards as payment, if you have at anytime given your credit card information to the PSN store in the past your credit card information may have been stolen.

As of today it is still unknown when the PSN will restore service to the gaming community. Sony has issued a statement in this mornings press release claiming, "We are taking the investigation seriously.  We decided to keep the service down to allow us to conduct a thorough investigation and verify smooth operation of our network services."

This event is not the first frustration PlayStation users have had to deal with this year. With the launch of "Black Ops" new map packs available for purchase online in March, it created a spike in sales that apparently Sony failed to plan for. The Black Ops expansion map packs were only available through PSN online or X-Box online stores. During the months of February though April many European countries including the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany could not get PlayStation Network cards. Users were forced to either use their credit card online or wait for Sony Network cards to be restocked at an unknown time. The question remains, 'did the hackers use strategic timing in performing a hack just after the sales cycle of Black Ops, the highest selling game of all time? No comment from Sony.

Playstation 3 network shut down

On the evening of April 20th many Sony PlayStation 3 network users saw the "network error" message as they tried to log on to play their favorite online game. Yeah so what, you gotta do a little maintenance once in a while to keep things running smoothly right? We have all see this happen once or twice a year for a network upgrade. But six days later Sony's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold posted the following message on the PlayStation Network Website, "An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th."  Apparently at the same time PSN went down Amazon.com was hacked by an unknown party.  Sony will not confirm they were officially 'hacked' or if there were similarity's, but commented that a "Networking event occurred that interrupted their services."

Since the launch of PSN in 2006 we have never seen the network go down for a long period of time. As of the posting of this article Sony does not have a time indication on when the network service will be restored. This is not good news for the fans that have remained loyal to the Sony game consoles. Most owners of PS3 have chosen to pay a little more money for their box beacuse of the free online gaming network and the great performance of the previous PlayStation consoles. We have even stood loyal to our brand when Xbox took flight and we missed out on a few titles that were not offered to PS3 users. Yes we have stood by our brand through the thick and now the thin. I suppose we will wait a little longer.

Christina Coffin: "Digital art is like creating worlds out of thin air"
When Christina Coffin was 9 she got her first computer, a VIC 20, and started typing her first game. She has never stopped typing since, and today she is Senior Engineer at DICE focusing on Battlefield 3.
Christina recently gave a talk at GDC and received the "Women in Gaming" Engineering Award from IGDA. This is her story how she entered the industry, why more women should come to it, and how you too (man or woman) can get a job in it.......http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/Default.aspx##
